Managing everyday anxiety

Epworth HealthCare

Anxiety is one of the most common mental health disorders experienced by people in Australia, with one in six young people experiencing it in their life.

It is normal for individuals to experience feeling stressed or worried following a stressful or high pressure situation. However, this feeling generally passes after the stressful situation concludes. Anxiety is where an individual experiences anxious feelings that are ongoing, for no particular reason. This condition impacts both physical health and emotional well-being, and makes it hard for a person to cope with daily life.

There are a number of potential causes for anxiety, including ongoing stressful events, physical health problems, and personality factors. Some research suggests that people with certain personality traits, such as perfectist, easily flustered, lack of self esteem and needing to control everything, are more likely to develop anxiety.

Dr Graham Wong of Epworth Clinic encourages people who may be suffering from anxiety to seek support from friends and family and speak to their local GP about potential strategies and programs to help overcome this condition.

Some tips Epworth Clinic recommend for effectively managing anxiety:

  • Cognitive behavioural therapy can help change patterns of thinking, behaviour and beliefs to help overcome triggers for anxiety
  • Relaxation techniques including yoga, meditation and counselling can help to reduce feelings of anxiety and can become part of a broader treatment plan
  • Seek medical assistance to obtain advice and a referral to specific treatment clinics
  • Communicate and seek support from friends and family to let them know how you feel

Epworth Clinic, located in Camberwell, is a new mental health unit that specialises in helping patients to improve their mental wellbeing as soon as possible through focusing on community treatment and skill building.
